Northeast Area Jazz Ensemble in Concert
Riverside Park Amphitheater
The annual summer concert series features the Yankton Area Summer Band and continues with the Fourth of July Concert and the Summer Pops Concert Series. These free concerts feature local and regional professional musicians who are paid and given exposure to a diverse audience.
The Northeast Area Jazz Ensemble (or NAJE) is a group of volunteer musicians dedicated to the promotion of jazz and big band music. They have played at many events in the past such as dances, and fundraisers in many different venues including Lincoln and Omaha. The musicians volunteer their time for rehearsal and performances while donations to NAJE go directly to music scholarships and equipment for the Northeast Community College music program. The band has been in existence since 1980, when the late Dr. Jim Boullion formed the group utilizing area musicians.
NAJE performs a variety of jazz styles including Samba, Bossa, Funk and Big Band Swing. Their repertoire includes such swing classics as In the Mood, Begin the Beguine, and I’ve Got You Under My Skin; as well as more “modern” classics from the 60’s by big bands such as Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Count Basie. The band plays everything from Norwegian Wood to Route 66; Bye Bye Blackbird to The Girl From Ipanema; Artie Shaw to the Tonight Show Band. This ensemble is a full “big band” (of 17) set up and designed to “Swing, Swing, Swing”.
